Microtones

Like all other instruments of the recorder family, Paetzold flutes are able to produce melodic intervals smaller than the semitone. Due to the unusual key combinations required, this is possible in certain ranges only. Of course all the different articulations (slaps, Flatterzunge, double staccato etc.) are possible; they tend to sound like articulated glissandos. Since the production of microtones requires complex fingering, labium actions are obviously not possible. The range in which very small intervals can be generated extends from A1 (quarter tone flat) to C2 and from D2 to F2, with numerous intermediate steps between Bb1 and C2:
