The Paetzold flute contrabass in F has a 2 octave range from F1 to F#3.

The range can be extended up to G#3, but these additional notes are very difficult to produce with a satisfying timbre and good tuning.

The Paetzold flute is a somewhat strenuous instrument to play, as it requires a large amount of air to produce sound. For this reason, the average duration of a steady tone varies, depending on the register. Perfectly tuned notes are restricted to the "mezzo forte" dynamic level, with very little possible variations.
